Start outside the dryer
The safest first checks are outside the cabinet: lint screen, flexible duct, crushed duct behind the dryer, wall duct, and exterior vent hood. A clean lint screen does not prove the full exhaust path is clear.
If the outside flap barely opens during a running cycle, airflow is restricted somewhere between the dryer and the exterior hood.
- Clean lint screen before each load.
- Check for crushed or kinked duct behind the dryer.
- Verify the exterior hood opens freely.
- Remove visible lint at the outlet without pushing it deeper.
When not to keep testing
Stop heated cycles if there is a burning smell, repeated airflow code, scorched lint, tripped breaker, or unusually hot laundry room. A cooldown or air-only cycle can be safer than another heated test.
Duct cleaning may require moving the dryer. If the appliance is stacked, gas-connected, or difficult to move safely, use a qualified technician.
How this relates to common codes
LG D80, D90, and D95 are common search examples, but the same safety logic applies to many vent or heat restriction warnings. The exact threshold is model-specific; the risk category is airflow.
